Under-21 Speeding Tickets and Other Traffic Offenses

Protecting Your Driver's License and Your Insurance Rates

If you have been charged with speeding or another traffic offense in Georgia, you are probably more irritated by the charge than you are worried about how it will affect your future. Having said that, there are reasons to fight a traffic ticket. Depending on the charge, you could face higher insurance rates or even suspension of your driver's license. If you have a commercial driver's license (CDL), you need to keep your driving record as clean as possible to protect your employment.

My name is Matt Karzen. As a criminal defense attorney in Athens, Georgia, I often defend college students, professional drivers and others who have received speeding and other traffic tickets in the Athens, Georgia, area. I offer a free initial consultation to discuss your case.

I handle all types of traffic tickets, including:

  • Under-age (under 21) speeding tickets
  • Speeding tickets of more than 23 miles over the speed limit
  • Alcohol-related offenses such as "MIP while driving" and DUI
  • Driving under suspension
  • Reckless driving
  • Exhibition of speed (street racing)
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Commercial vehicle violations, such as exceeding the load limit

Reducing a ticket to a less serious offense can protect your driver's license and your insurance rates. For example, if you are under 21 and plead guilty to speeding 24 or more miles over the speed limit, your driver's license will be automatically suspended. Whatever your age, if you plead guilty to speeding more than 14 miles over the limit, the court will send the information to Georgia Driver's Services and your insurance company can find out by running a simple history check.

Do not ignore traffic tickets: If you receive a speeding or other traffic ticket, you should either pay the ticket or hire a lawyer to fight it. If you ignore a ticket, it will not only come back to haunt you the next time you try to renew your driver's license (it will be suspended), but a warrant for your arrest will issue if you miss court.
